Product Description The standard for supplementary texts in Chinese history courses. Now newly expanded with more material. Presents personal documents, social records, laws and documents that historians often ignore. Even more useful than its now classic predecessor.

| Customer Reviews: Very interesting & useful April 9, 2010 B. Smith (Hong Kong) This work is a great introduction to Chinese civilization and helps the reader to get into the Chinese mind and mentallity. Great if you want an overview but the timespan it covers is so huge that it can not deal with any one time in too much detail.
I found Chinese Sketches: Life in 19th Century China very useful for 19th century China as it is a first-hand account.
The real deal March 25, 2003 Taura (Hong Kong) 18 out of 41 found this review helpful
An excellent way for China experts or the new and curious to look at Chinese history - translated original texts from turtle shell predictions four thousand years old to marriage contracts 700 years old.
satisfied August 16, 2010 unknownreader Arrived with the damage as told in its description: a damaged cover and a few notes but otherwise untouched pages. I would recommend buying from this user.

Bought for my daughter in college; it's required for her course.
She tells me it's a bit dry at first but then picks up and is quite thorough in the coverage of the subject matter.
not my favorate history book September 24, 2009 Jine Liu (Sacramento, CA,USA) direct translation of the Chinese Classics, some of the articles are hard to understand without any explanations. Not a very interesting book to read.
