Customer Reviews:
4 out of 5 stars More fun than you'd ever expect.   December 9, 2005

The history is as grim as you'd expect given the era and place. But the people that Wasserstein has unearthed (and the style he presents them in) are astounding & make the book trot right along. Would be pulp authors should be mining this book for things like the trombone playing Purple Gang member who ended up a bodyguard in Shanghai, or the bar-tending defrocked Jesuit shacking up with a scandalous refugee.
